Gestational Diabetes Symptoms

In women who do not have a previous history of diabetes, gestational diabetes symptoms are actually quite mild or even completely absent. In fact, for most pregnant women who develop gestational diabetes, they do not even know they have it as it does not cause significant signs or symptoms that would be noticed by the woman.

Most commonly, the diagnosis of gestation diabetes is made by routine screening tests, generally a glucose tolerance test, which is generally routinely given during the pre-natal care of a pregnant woman.

In some cases, particularly if the hyperglycemia (high blood glucose) is severe, the pregnant woman may experience symptoms of gestational diabetes including excessive thirst and/or increased urination, as can occur with with regular diabetes with hyperglycemia.

If you are concerned about gestational diabetes you should discuss it with your own physicians and determine the appropriate time to test for it. Even without symptoms, individuals with gestational diabetes are at risk for complications associated with the condition.
